It can be hard to balance the innate info-junkie tendencies against the desire to produce. I know I struggle with it daily. But at the same time, I think the proper balance will drive both - I want to learn more about topic X and once I do, I should take the time to write about it before I move on to topic Y, both to cement it in my brain and to provide notes should that cement fail and I need to refresh my knowledge. Additionally, sharing knowledge ensures a healthy ecosystem of information from which we all benefit.

Re: Allotting personal time

Great post, Ryan - I'm similarly struggling with personal time management amidst the tidal wave of learning and communications opportunities at any give moment. Just like the offline world, I use it to get a better understanding of what people i find credible and interesting think. When we were at Forrester this week, I was reminded again that when it comes to all this new stuff, what they say is true: "focus on the relationships not the technology." When I think about how I use nearly any Web 2 technologies, its just broadens/facilitates what I was already doing offline.

Re: Are tags user-centric or site-centric?

I'm with Doug, but I typically frequent blogs with a small number of writers with pseudo-editorial control over what the tag cloud looks like.

I wonder if the types of sites a user visits generate a lot of that user's expectations around how tagging works.

Re: Are tags user-centric or site-centric?

I actually use tags in a content-centric mode, because I use them like smarter search keywords. I love Flickr for that reason, and I think it makes the tool so much more useful than Google Image Search, for instance. Of course, standard search rules apply - using multiple tags or proper nouns always works better. On the other hand, I do filter a lot of content by user, I just don't use tagging as the feature-level way to do it. For me RSS feed selection, Twitter following, etc. all work best when you consider the person who is the source, not necessarily the topic.

Re: Are tags user-centric or site-centric?

Tagging? As long as Twitter users do not respond to spammers, the spammers will see it as a waste of time.

Re: When does consumer engagement become SPAM?

It all depends on the nature and content of the reply. If it's a genuine response from a real person, then it's much harder to call it spam in my opinion. In this case, the fact that Popeye's responded in a way that shows they actually read Alex's tweet and responded with passion. I wish I had that level of service when I go to one of their stores.

Zappos is a great example of a company that gets it. It's insane how many of their employees actively use Twitter, which includes their CEO. They're tinkering with this experiment and blazing some cool trails along the way.

The very nature of Twitter encourages open communication from people or organizations who may not know each other directly. In the examples you listed above, the companies were actually being helpful, which I think rocks, and I for one, would love to see this type of use and participation grow.

That said, spammer's have found holes, and will likely find or create more, and some companies try to use Twitter for purely promotional means. In both cases the folks behind Twitter, and those of us who use it will need to step up in varying degrees to combat the misuse.

Alex S.
